Michael: What tells you that when the fit is maybe starting to not fit so well?
Thomas: It’s an energy that you have coming to work. It’s how many coping or adjustment mechanisms you’re employing in order to continue that work. Are you spinning the story for yourself, or are you rewriting the narrative and job crafting in terms of what is your purpose in that moment? What are you adding to the teams?
There’s a visceral feeling or an emotion or feelings that, upon further examination, and picking apart the emotion from what is happening and being able to stitch it all together, that is when it becomes clear what the next move is.
What helps you notice those signals?
A variety of things. When it gets very poignant is how it spills over into your personal life in terms of how you’re acting. I always feel I could journal more. Journaling is actually a very important process for me in terms of processing what is going on, thoughts, feelings, direction, et cetera.
I strongly believe in executive coaching and coaches, and so I’ve coaches that have helped uncover, and that’s also an exploration.
Whether it be journaling and different things, just hitting those different important things to do.
Whether it be talking to people, friends, it is a sense inside that something’s out of alignment and then various ways to explore that, various ways to step outside of it, examine it and dig in as to what the misalignment is.
