Hey! Would you like your team to become uncommon?
You want to meet your goals with confidence and clarity. You want to build loyalty and a sense of belonging. You want to enjoy work.
You can achieve all of this by bringing, engaging, and celebrating your whole self.
That’s how you start building an uncommon team.
Bring your whole self
What does it mean to bring your whole self?
You’re already bringing your brain. Otherwise, how are you reading this?
You’re also already bringing your heart. I’m confident emotions are making themselves known. Even if you specifically entered engineering so that you wouldn’t have to deal with them.
I know you’re bringing your body. Or is your brain wandering around unattended?
Bringing your whole self means integrating your brain, heart, and body into a whole that works together.
Start by recognizing what each of them is telling you.
Notice where they agree and where they conflict.
Talk with them and ask them questions.
Get a sense of what they are perceiving.
You are starting to bring your whole self. You are also starting to engage your whole self.
Engage your whole self
Recognizing and interacting with your brain, heart, and body starts to engage your whole self. Now, ask them to work together.
Ask them to debate each other.
Ask them to argue each other’s point of view.
Ask them to explain how that other point of view enriches their own.
Ask them to help each other out.
Ask them to work together to help you out.
Engaging your whole self helps you find more options and better solutions. It helps you enjoy your work more. It helps you find confidence and clarity.
And, it’s not enough on its own. You also need to celebrate your whole self.
Celebrate your whole self
Celebrate your whole self to show your pride in it, honor it, and encourage it.
Celebrating starts with noticing. So, celebrate each time you notice.
Celebrate each you pay attention to your brain, heart, and body. Celebrate each time you pay attention to your whole self.
Celebrate each time your brain, heart, and body speak up.
Celebrate when they speak up as your whole self.
Celebrate every time your whole self helps you recognize an option you wouldn’t have otherwise.
Celebrate every time your whole self helps you accomplish something you couldn’t have without their help.
Celebrating when you bring and engage with your whole self helps you become uncommon. It also helps your team become uncommon.
Build an uncommon team
You build an uncommon team by building a team of uncommon individuals.
To help each individual become uncommon, show them your uncommon journey.
Be clear when you bring your whole self and when you don’t.
Show them the difference between when you engage your whole self and when you don’t.
Show them they are safe to fail by celebrating all the times you fail.
Show them they are safe becoming uncommon by becoming uncommon.
As you and they become uncommon, you will be well on your way to building an uncommon team.
